Niugini Dive Adventures closes diving operations - 10/2023
We regret to announce the temporary suspension of all diving operations for Niugini Dive Adventures. Having proudly showcased the mesmerizing underwater beauty of Madang for over 30 years, we regretfully must close our scuba diving services for the time being. The lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Papua New Guinea, especially in places like Madang, is expected to be substantial.
While we possess the necessary infrastructure to uphold a top-tier dive shop and service, the challenges associated with operating in this region have become increasingly daunting. These challenges encompass difficulties in sourcing parts, unreliable airline services, and a limited availability of safety resources in Papua New Guinea.
While we will continue to offer snorkel tours and harbour cruises, we deem it necessary to suspend our diving operations temporarily to reassess the prospects for tourism in Papua New Guinea over the next few years. We extend our sincere apologies for any inconveniences this may cause and look forward to welcoming divers back to Madang in the near future.
Orcas in Papua New Guinea - 1/23
Orcas, also known as Killer whales, are typically found in colder waters such as the Arctic and Antarctic. However, there have been many sightings of orcas in the waters of Papua New Guinea. According to research (click here for report), as well as countless sightings around the Bismarck Sea, these orcas are considered residents in Papua New Guinea, meaning they are a population that is native to this region and not just occasional visitors. The cause of this phenomenon is still not well understood and more research is needed to understand why these orcas have adapted to living in tropical waters.
We are excited to share that our team has recently had several encounters with Orca's in Madang
On one occasion, 2 lucky divers had the privilege of a brief but unforgettable encounter with a pod of 6 individuals on a dive at barracuda point. Our team was able to observe the majestic creatures for a short time, showcasing their unique behaviours and strong family bonds. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for them. We are grateful for these opportunities to witness such a beautiful and powerful species in their natural habitat.
“The tropical nation of Papua New Guinea is located north of Australia in the Coral Triangle, also known as the Amazon of the ocean. Papua New Guinea and its offshore islands evoke a sense of wonder, just by the very nature of their remote location. The nation boasts more than 700 tribes and it's equally diverse beneath the seas. Because Papua New Guinea doesn't suffer from over tourism, the reefs have remained pristine and plentiful.
Just offshore from Madang is the volcanic seamount Planet Rock, whirling with barracuda, tuna, snapper, and reef sharks. If you are into diving, there are also some WWII wrecks nearby to explore.”
