Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is your dive shop closed?
A: Yes, we closed our dive shop in early 2023 due to the impacts of covid-19.
Q: Do you still offer snorkelling and harbour cruises?
A: Yes, while we have stopped our diving operations, we still offer snorkelling and harbour cruises around Madang. Contact nda@madangresort.com for more info.
Q: Where is the nearest decompression chamber?
A: The only decompression chamber in Papua New Guinea is located in Port Moresby.
Q: Is there a best time to dive in Papua New Guinea?
A: You can dive in Papua New Guinea all year round with individual dive sites subject to the current weather conditions. Water temperatures range from 25-30° C with visibility ranging from 20-40 metres unless diving at muck diving sites.
Q: I cannot swim well – can I become a scuba diver?
A: Experienced divers are relaxed, rarely use their arms and propel themselves with long, slow kicks. If you do not consider yourself to be a great swimmer, that won’t prevent you from becoming a scuba diver with only basic water skills required which include the ability to:
Float or tread water for 10 minutes - by lying on your back or front; treading water; doing a ‘dog paddle’ or anything else to stay afloat with using any floatation aids.
Swim 200 metres whilst wearing a mask, fins and snorkel without stopping – taking as long as you want, using as many strokes as you wish.
Q: How old do you need to be to dive?
A: PADI’s minimum age for diving is 12-years-old for an introductory dive; and divers cannot exceed the depth of 12metres until they have an open water certificate.
Q: What could we see diving or snorkelling in Madang?
A: We can guarantee you will see the iconic reef dwellers such as nemo, giant clams and beautiful coral. You may also see manta rays, whalesharks, schools of hammerhead sharks or even orcas.
Q: What time do dive charters depart?
A: We depart the Madang Resort Marina at approximately 9.00am. Earlier, or later departures are available upon request.
Q: Do I need a medical certificate for diving?
A: All divers are required to complete a medical questionnaire and, only if you say yes to any of the questions, will you then be required to get a scuba diving medical before diving.
Q: I am a certified diver and my partner or friend is doing the intro dive - can I join them on the intro dive?
A: Yes of course you can – you will be charged at the certified diver rate.
Q: Do you have multilingual dive instructors?
A: Yes, we currently have a Japanese speaking Instructor as well as a English speaking Dive Master
Q: What should I bring?

Q: Can I scuba dive with no experience?
A: Absolutely. Anyone with good general health can enjoy the underwater wonders of Madang. Some illnesses such as asthma and epilepsy may preclude you from scuba diving. Please check with your doctor or contact our dive staff if you have any questions.
Q: Do you provide gear?
A: We have a range of snorkel and dive gear available for hire. Please contact our dive staff to organise gear hire prior to your dives. Dive rates do not include any gear hire.
Q: I haven’t dived in years and I’m a bit rusty – do you offer refresher courses?
A: Absolutely. It is important to refresh your memory every few years if you are not regularly diving. Our friendly team of Divemaster’s and Instructors can help get you back up to scratch before commencing your scheduled dives. Please contact our dive staff to organise this.
Q: What is the Environment and dive site fee?
A: The Environment and dive site fee goes towards our own initiative to assist in cleaning up Madang – when our dive team assist in dive site clean ups by collecting and removing the rubbish from the ocean floor. The dive site fee is collected and paid to the nearby island villages that we dive nearby.
Q. Does your boats have a decompression chamber?
A: Divers should note that Madang does not offer a decompression chamber, with the closest chamber located in Port Moresby.
